Grenoble is a city in southeastern France that is situated at the foot of the French Alps where the river Drac joins the Isere. Located in the Rhône-Alpes region, Grenoble is the capital of the department of Isere. The proximity of the mountains has led to the city being known as the "Capital of Alps." Grenoble's history encompasses a period of more than 2,000 years, and the city has been the capital of the Dauphiné since the eleventh century. Grenoble experienced a period of economic expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which is symbolized by the holding of the X Olympic Winter Games in 1968. The city is now a significant scientific center in Europe.
In the city there are plenty of preserved gothic architectural sights, such as: the Notre Dame Cathedral from 13th century, Saint-Laurent Church from 11th century, 12th century St. Andrew Church and also eternal 11th century Palace of Justice. The city has got many different museums inter alia: Regional Museum, City Museum with its magnificent collection of modern art, Museum of Paintings and Sculpture which owns one of the biggest collection of art in France, although Museum of Stendhal, who was born in this town. Grenoble and its neighborhoods are overcrowded with lovely little towns with their old castles but first of all their beautiful architecture...
